Numerous hermitages evoke the piety that prevails in this municipality, particularly the Church of San José, the patron saint of Abanilla, which was consecrated by Cardinal Belluga in 1712.

Visitors to Abanilla Murcia can see the tradition of the town's water mills and oil presses, the legacy of its forefathers, almost as if the town were wishing to recover its past. Nature spots include an attractive lunar landscape, where you can enjoy a pleasant swim in the waters that flow through it

In the Plaza de la Purísima you will find the impressive Church of San José, the patron saint, of 1712, and a newly erected statue to commemorate the Moors and the Christians. And hidden away in the corner is were you will find the old public laundry with its old sinks and wash boards.

Abanilla has one of the last working public laundries in the region of Murcia

The Plaza where you will find one of the last working public laundries in the region of Murcia.

The laundry is still used frequently today by young and old alike, and it is common to see the women of the village carrying their laundry in buckets or in baskets on their heads down to the washroom.

 

 

 

Abanilla Commandancy Building

Very near by is the Casa de la Encomienda or Commandancy Building, which used to be both the residence of the Knight Commander and the communal granary. Of particular note are its spacious rooms crowned by groined vaulted ceilings. It is currently used as a public building and the home to the Abanilla Library, meeting hall along with council and other offices.
